We love to Washi!

Question:  What is Washi tape and how do I use it?

AnswerWashi tape originated in Japan and is a decorative tape made out of washi paper. The tape is slightly transparent, can be torn by hand and has a repeat decorative patten on the surface. This makes it ideal for using in a variety of projects.  Washi tape is easily removable and doesn't leave a sticky residue.

Ways to use Washi Tape:

  • Make your own background paper.  It is really easy to line things up using your grid paper.  Don't worry if you mess it up.  Washi tape is easily removeable especially if you do not press down hard on it until you are sure you have it right where you want it.
  • Use it as a border.  Washi tape can be layered as well.  Be creative.  You don't even need to keep the edges "clean".  A grunge type card can be easily made by distressing the edge of the washi tape after you have placed it on your card stock.  Just roll the edges down.  Be sure to use your embossing buddy to get rid of the extra stickiness.
  • Use it to attach other embellishments and punches.  Use it like scotch tape.  It's easier to tear and the decorative patterns add interest to your project.
  • Don't be limited to paper…  Washi tape can be used for many creative things like making binder clips match your Stampin'Up supplies.  Or using it to decorate a tea candle tin.  Having a party?  Washi tape can be used to name your guest's glasses.  Becomes it comes off so easily without sticky residue it's a perfect solution!

Tips for Washi Tape

  • You want to keep your Washi Tape clean.  There is nothing worse then placing a strip on your project and having dust or hair "stuck" there.  So, if it should happen to fall on the floor and pick up dust or hair along the edges, a easy way to clean the roll is to using packing tape.  Take a piece of packing tape and attach it to the edge of the washi tape.  Make sure to rub it briskly then peel it away.  Then do it again on the other side.
  • There are many ways to store your Washi Tape.  One of  the easiest way is to use the Tag a Bag Gift Boxes from Stampin' Up!  Simply store them in the box and then you can easily see your collection through the clear sleeve on the box.
